CATCH UP
Ma! It has been a whole year! Slightly over an year to be precise.
Oh Ma, so much about me & life has changed. Where to start? I will break it down for you:
Life
Life has been good. I mean, we are still here even with Covid, right? I moved from Thika Road to Mombasa Road to one of those old houses in one of those old estates that I love so much. At one point I had a cat, Cleo, but she ran away ( read stolen by neighbors). I want to get another furry friend, maybe a dog this time.
Still no man but I have moved away from confirmed singlehood. Right now I am reading about child - free married couples but we'll discuss that more at another time.
I have been watching movies more than I have been reading & it bothers me. Maybe it is the quality of books I am reading - been reading books by white authors when all I really want to read are African authors. I thoroughly enjoyed The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by TItilola Alexandrah Shoneyin & Abubakar Adam Ibrahim's Season of Crimson Blossoms. African stories thrill me. Next to African stories for me is the Middle Eastern Stories. I loved rich nuanced cultures.
What's the one thing I have been working on becoming better at? Setting & enforcing boundaries. This tweet says it best:
Ma, when they tell us not to meet our heroes, they aren't wrong. Mine shouts at people in the office. Bullies everyone into submission. She propagates the notion that employees cannot be trusted even though we all know that people tend to live up to what you show them you think of them. But even disruption has its silver linings. Because of this fall out, I am more honest - no more sucking up. I no longer scurry trying to be helpful. I no longer entertain work calls in my personal time.& no, it is not easy because you never know what you could get accused of next - or what the next 'stern' email will say but it's all worth it my love. Speak your truth even if your voice shakes!
